How disability-friendly are Alabama’s major cities?

A recent report suggests that, compared to other large U.S. cities, Alabama’s major cities may be particularly challenging places to live for people with disabilities.

The WalletHub report ranked 182 large U.S. cities for how good of places they are for individuals with disabilities. Four Alabama cities, including Birmingham, were included in the rankings.

None of the four Alabama cities did very well in the report. All of them ranked in the bottom fourth of the nation.

Birmingham received a ranking of No. 163. This was the second highest ranking among Alabama cities. Birmingham was behind Montgomery (No. 150), but ahead of Mobile (No. 165) and Huntsville (No. 174).

The report reviewed three categories of factors in coming up with the overall rankings. These categories were: economy, health care and quality of life.

In all three of these categories, Birmingham ranked in the bottom half of the nation. The city’s ranks were:

  • 115th for quality of life
  • 136th for economy
  • 136th for health care

Do you agree with the report? Do you think Birmingham and other large Alabama cities are particularly tough places to have a disability?

How individuals with disabilities address the challenges they face can be very impactful. This is not only the case for the difficulties related to where they live, but also challenging legal issues. One type of legal difficulty individuals with disabilities can encounter are problems when it comes to pursuing Social Security disability benefits. Skilled attorneys can help SSD applicants with their efforts to keep such problems from blocking them from being able to receive the benefits they need.
