Recognize elder neglect

When you put a family member in an Alabama nursing home, you typically expect this person to receive the kind of care you cannot provide. In some situations, though, you may find that the nursing home staff is neglecting your loved one. At the Law Offices of Clark, James, Hanlin and Hunt, LLC., we understand that the neglect of a senior is a serious incident.

You may think that nursing home neglect is the kind of incident that never happens. Unfortunately, your elderly family member might not receive enough care if a nursing home is not well-run or does not have enough staff members. Sometimes your loved one might not be able to tell you if he or she is being neglected, or he or she may think the level of care is normal. In this situation, it is important for you to know what elder neglect looks like so you can keep your loved one safe.

If your loved one is being neglected, he or she may not receive enough to drink. According to Caring.com, a senior might be dehydrated if he or she has cracked lips or feels confused or dizzy. You may want to watch the nursing home staff interact with your family member. If your loved one cannot hold a cup without assistance or has difficulty swallowing water but does not receive aid from a staff member, this might be a sign that your family member is not receiving enough care. Additionally, a neglected senior may be malnourished because he or she is not eating enough. You may want to speak to a nurse if you notice that your elderly loved one has lost a significant amount of weight since entering the nursing home.

If your elderly family member is bedridden, it is a good idea to make sure he or she has not developed pressure sores. These sores might appear on a senior's legs, shoulder blades, backside or hips if he or she stays in the same position for too long. If you notice pressure sores, it is important to speak to someone because these sores can harm a senior's body tissue and cause serious injuries if left untreated.
