What are some hidden signs of nursing home neglect?

On Behalf of | Apr 13, 2021 | Nursing Home Neglect And Abuse |

Nursing homes can be a haven for older adults who need extra care, but they can also hide mistreatment or neglect.

Knowing the more subtle signs of nursing home neglect can help you tell whether the caretakers are properly providing for your loved one. Many older people do not report any mistreatment they may experience for various reasons, including embarrassment or the physical or mental inability to do so.

Unmet needs

According to Psychology Today, one of the biggest signs of neglect is the lack of sufficient food or water. You may notice pill bottles that are constantly empty even after you visit the nursing home multiple times.

If the building seems insufficiently warm or too cold, it could be a sign of an inadequate living environment. Not providing these necessities can cause serious health concerns for older people.

Strange appearances

Poor personal hygiene is another sign of neglect since many older people cannot safely clean themselves without help. Dirty hair, unclean nails and improper clothing are all signs of this kind of neglect. An older person may also not have proper aids to perform daily activities, such as hearing aids or a walker.

Odd explanations

Your loved one may suffer from mysterious bruises or cuts. When you ask where they came from, he or she could struggle to answer clearly or may change the subject entirely.

This hesitancy could reflect a strained relationship with the caretakers at the nursing home. Neglect is a serious issue, and it can often go undetected unless you ask the right questions and notice more subtle signs.
