How long does it take to get Social Security Disability?

On Behalf of | Oct 18, 2021 | Social Security Disability |

When you are unable to work due to a disability, it can be difficult to support yourself. Nonetheless, the bills do not stop piling up. Because this situation can be frustrating, it is understandable if you are eager to find out when you will receive the Social Security Disability benefits that you applied for.

Although dealing with any type of financial troubles surrounding a disability can be extremely challenging, there is generally a long waiting process before you can receive assistance. First, you must wait for your approval. Then, you have to wait for your payment.

Wait time for a claim response can vary

The wait time to hear back from the Social Security Administration after you apply can vary. For most people, it takes three to fives months before receiving notification that the SSA has approved their benefits. If more than five months have passed and you have not heard anything, further investigation may be necessary.

Wait time for payment can take five months

After the SSA approves your SSDI application, you typically must wait for at least five months before receiving payment. An exception to the payment wait time requirement is for individuals who have a disability resulting from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and applied after July 2020. For all recipients, you can generally expect your payment to arrive one month after it is due.

If you are struggling to pay bills due to a disability, do not give up hope. Even if it can take longer than what is ideal to receive help, your assistance will come if you qualify.
